National Championships
Canadian Championships, Moncton, NB - June 27/29, 2014
4 STL athletes travelled to Moncton, New Brunswick to compete at the 2014 Canadian Senior Championships. Matt Brisson who was the 2012 National Champion, was competing again this year in the 110m Hurdles. He sustained a significant injury in 2013 that has kept him from returning to his maximum competition form. In spite of this, Matt still fought hard to make it into the finals, placing 5th in a very competitive field with a time of 14.51. Charles Nguyen and Riley Bell made their first trip to Nationals at the Senior level. Charles finished 12th in Hammer Throw (56.13m). Riley also finished 12th in Triple Jump while competing with a mild hamstring injury.
Canadian Junior Championships, St. Therese, QC - July 04/06, 2014
STL sent 2 jumpers and 2 throwers to Quebec this year to compete at the 2014 Canadian Junior Championships. Rachael Wolfs and Allie Kennedy both qualified to compete at Nationals in their first year of training in Pole Vault. The very windy weather conditions were not ideal for vaulting but Rachael cleared the bar at 3.20m to place 5th, with Allie finishing 11th overall. Karli Milmine also placed 8th in Shot Put (11.63m) and 9th in Discus (33.43m) in her first National competition.
Noah Rolph, while still a Youth athlete, qualified to compete at the Junior Championships using heavier weighted implements. Noah rose to the challenge and made the podium in Hammer Throw winning the Bronze medal with a toss of 51.14m. He also placed 4th in Shot Put (15.38m) and 5th in Discus (43.93m). Noah´s performances were all new PB´s with Junior implements as well as a new club record in Shot Put.
Canadian Youth Championships, Langley, BC - August 15/19, 2014
Three STL athletes participated in the 2014 Canadian Youth Championships held in Langley BC. Rebecca Chouinard and Brittney Wouters competed wearing STL colours, while STL thrower Noah Rolph represented Ontario on the RCL Provincial team.
Noah was a strong member of the Provincial team, bringing home 3 medals. He won Gold in Youth Boy's Hammer Throw (61.95m), Silver in Shot Put with a new PB of 17.39m, and Bronze in Discus (48.93m).
Rebecca placed 8th in Shot Put with a distance of 11.74m. Brittney attended her first National competition and ran a new PB in the Midget Girls 80m Hurdles with a time of 13.53, but came just short of making the final.
Congratulations to all our athletes for their efforts and accomplishments competing at the National level this year.
Athletics Ontario Provincial Championships
AO Combined events/Standards Meet - North York, TO - June 14, 2014
At the 2014 Combined Events Championships, STL's Kenzie Smyth scored 1344 points on her way to win the Bantam Girls Tetrathlon. With Kenzie´s accumulation of points in the 4 events, she also set a new Provincial record. Results from her individual events: 80mH (16.54), HJ (1.30m), SP (6.18m), 200m (31.59).
Tanner Smyth and Hayden Bell finished in the top 2 spots on the podium in the Midget Boys Pentathlon. Tanner´s performances accumulated a total of 2424 points to award him the Gold medal and a new club record. Hayden´s total of 2120 points earned him the Silver medal. Tanner´s results: 100mH (16.02), LJ (4.87m), SP (7.87m), HJ (1.52m), 1000 (3:09.68) Hayden´s results: 100mH (16.43), LJ (4.84), SP (8.90), HJ (1.46m), 1000m (3:43.40)
Other notable results in individual events were:
- Rachael Wolfs with a new PB and club record in Junior Women's Pole Vault (3.35m)
- Noah Rolph, a Youth athlete competing with Junior implements marked 3 PB's and 2 new club records in SP (14.99m), DT (45.00m), and HT (46.58m)
- Karli Milmine with 2 new PB's and a new club record in SP (10.92m) and DT (32.10m)
- Greg Spangenberg with a new PB in 300mH (41.84)
- Charles Nguyen, recently home from school in Oklahoma, with a 1st place finish in Men´s Hammer Throw (57.57m)
AO Jr/Sr Provincial Championships, Ottawa, ON - July 19/20, 2014
Rachael Wolfs won Silver in the Junior Women's Pole Vault with a new PB and new club record, clearing the bar at 3.45m. This is Rachael´s first year competing in PV and it was also her first Provincial medal performance.
Karli Milmine placed 4th in Junior Women's Discus with a toss of 31.52m, and 6th in Shot Put with 10.58m. Charles Nguyen threw 51.20m in Senior Men's Hammer Throw positioning him in 4th place.
AO B/M/Y Provincial Championships, Windsor, ON - August 02/03, 2014
STL had very notable representation at this year's Bantam/Midget/Youth Provincial Championships. With 18 athletes entered totaling 56 entries, this was the largest team our club had competing in recent years. STL athletes came home with 2 Gold, 2 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals with many PB performances to complete their season.
In the Bantam category, Kenzie Smyth won the Silver medal in High Jump with jump of 1.35m. She also placed 6th in the 80m Hurdles (14.96) and 7th in Long Jump (4.19m). Brianna Morphy placed 4th in the 80m Hurdles (13.94) with a new PB and new club record.
In the Midget category, Tanner Smyth captured the Bronze medal in High Jump clearing 1.60m. He also made the 100m Hurdle final, placing 6th with a time of 16.13.
In the Youth category, Noah Rolph lead the way in medals with 2 Gold and a Silver. Noah won the Hammer Throw (52.49m) and Shot Put (16.56m) and placed 2nd in Discus (45.52m). Rebecca Chouinard won the Bronze medal in Girl´s Hammer Throw (48.44m) as well as placing 7th in Shot Put (11.94m).
Other notable performances:
- Hunter Smith placed 4th in both Midget Girls SP (9.08m) & DT (21.43m)
- Hayden Bell placed 5th in Midget Boys HJ (1.60m) & 8th in the 100mH Finals
- Jackson Medeiros placed 5th in Midget Boys JT (30.89m) and 7th in HJ (1.45m)
- Kyle Noviss placed 5th in Midget Boys 1500m S/C (5:25.22)
- Julia Vanhoucke placed 8th in Midget Girls 300m (42.84)
- Kennady Hopkins placed 6th in Youth Girls JT (33.04m)
We look forward to watching these young athletes continue to develop, with their goals already set for next year's Provincials and looking towards National competitions in the years to come.
Great Lakes League
2014 marked the 2nd year of the return of the Great Lakes League. STL was an active participant in the planning, organizing, and support of this series. Our athletes competed in all 5 meets in the series that focuses on providing local competition opportunities. The 5 meets included 4 regular meets - London, Kitchener, St. Thomas, and Woodstock, with a 5th GLL Championship meet in London to finish off the series. These “local” all-comers meets provided excellent competition preparation for the AO Provincial Championships. There were many new PB´s achieved throughout the series, as well as club records broken and National standards met to allow athletes to qualify for the Canadian National Championships.

RCL Meet Series
District A Legion Championships, Chatham, ON - June 20/21, 2014
STL had 21 young athletes competing at this year´s District A´ meet. It was another very successful year with a total medal count of 19 as well as 1 meet record.
In the Bantam category, Kenzie Smyth won the girls High Jump with 1.35m and placed 5th in Long Jump with a new PB of 4.24m. Brianna Morphy placed 4th in the Long Jump with a new PB of 4.27m. AJ Stanat captured the Silver medal in Boys Shot Put with a throw of 6.64m.
In the Midget category, Julia Vanhoucke won the 300m with a new PB of 43.97 - also a new club record. Julia also captured two Bronze medals in the 100m (13.29) and 200m (27.31). Brittney Wouters came home with 2 medals - a Silver medal in the 200m Hurdles (29.63) and a Bronze in the 300m (46.65). Both times were new PB's for Brittney. Newcomer Hunter Smith won two Gold medals with new PB's in Shot Put (8.94m) and in Discus (19.98m). Hayden Bell won the Silver in High Jump (1.65m) while Tanner Smyth took the Bronze, also with a jump of 1.65m. Tanner also placed 4th in the 200m Hurdles with a new PB of 28.00. Kyle Noviss had a new PB of 5:21.00 in the 1500m S/C earning him the Gold medal. Kyle also competed in his first Javelin competition and threw 27.75m to earn him a Bronze medal. Jackson Medeiros achieved a Silver medal in Javelin with a throw of 28.57m. Jackson also placed 5th in High Jump with a 1.45m effort.
In the Youth category, Rebecca Chouinard won the Gold in Hammer Throw with 41.97m. Her performance was a new meet record. Rebecca also won Gold in Shot Put (12.54m) and Silver in Discus (26.93m). Noah Rolph won all 3 of his events - Shot Put (17.25m), Discus (51.78m), and Hammer Throw (56.63m). Noah performances in the DT and the SP were new PB's and new club records.
Julia Vanhoucke (200m, 300m, 100m), Rebecca Chouinard (SP, DT, HT), and Noah Rolph (SP, DT, HT) were all selected to represent District A' at the RCL Provincial Championships.
RCL Provincial Championships, Brampton, ON - July 11/12,2014
3 STL athletes advanced to the RCL Provincial Championships as a part of the District A' team. Noah Rolph won the Youth Boys Hammer Throw with a new Provincial record of 63.65m. He also brought home 2 Silver medals in Shot Put (16.94m) and Discus (48.32m). Also in the Youth category, Rebecca Chouinard placed 4th in Hammer Throw, 5th in Shot put, and 8th in Discus. In the Midget Girls category, Julia Vanhoucke placed 8th in the 300m.
Noah was selected to the Ontario Team to compete in Langley, BC at the RCL National Championships. Rebecca and Julia have made event standards in their respective events and will also have the opportunity to compete at the 2014 Midget/Youth National Championships.
High School Season
The 2014 outdoor season began for most of STL´s athletes in April with the high school meet schedule. Unfortunately most of these meets took place in very cold and wet weather conditions, making it hard for athletes to compete and prepare for their championships.
This year we saw a whole new crop of raw but talented athletes training with the club to help better prepare themselves for the high school meets.
OFSAA West Regionals, Windsor Ontario - May 30/31, 2014
8 STL athletes, representing 4 different high schools, advanced on to OFSAA West Regionals held this year at the Windsor University stadium. Noah Rolph, Abbey Williamson, Brittney Wouters, Greg Spangeberg, and Kennady Hopkins all wore Parkside CI colours while Allie Kennedy jumped for Central Elgin, Rebecca Chouinard threw for St Joseph´s, and Karli Milmine represented East Elgin.
Noah competed in Discus, Shot Put, and Javelin, advancing to OFSAA in all 3 events. He won the DT with a new PB of 49.20m and placed 2nd in both SP (16.28m) and JT (52.01m). His performance in Javelin was also a new PB.
Abbey advanced to OFSAA in the Senior Girls High Jump, placing 2nd with a new PB of 1.62m. Abbey's performance was also a new club record. Rebecca placed 2nd in Shot Put sending her through to OFSAA as well.
Two STL rookies, Greg Spangenberg and Kennady Hopkins, were also successful in making it through to OFSAA. Greg advanced in 300m Hurdles, running a PB of 41.54. Kennady threw a 32.23m PB in Javelin to place 4th and move on as well.
OFSAA Finals, Mississauga, Ontario - June 05/07, 2014
Noah Rolph took top honours at OFSAA, winning medals in all 3 of his events. Noah came home with 2 Golds and a Silver, single-handedly putting him in a 3-way tie for the Senior Men's Division title. His Gold medals were achieved in DT (50.18m) and SP (17.12m), with his JT of 52.17m earning him the Silver. All 3 performances were new PB's for Noah.
While this was Abbey's final OFSAA appearance in her graduating year, Rebecca Chouinard, Greg Spangeberg, and Kennady Hopkins will all have another shot at the high school Provincial Championships in 2015.
AO Youth - Senior Indoor Championships
Toronto, ON, February 15/17, 2014
STL´s throwers once again turned heads at the Indoor Provincial Championships held at York University. Noah Rolph took top honours with a new Provincial record, a new club record and 2 new PB´s. In Youth Boys Weight throw, Noah broke the Provincial record with a toss of 21.78m, earning him the Gold medal. He also competed in Shot Put, capturing a silver medal with a throw of 16.31m. Noah is now Nationally ranked #1 in Weight throw and #2 in Shot put in his age category.
Rebecca Chouinard came home with a Bronze medal in Youth Girls Weight Throw with a toss of 14.52m and placed 5th in the Shot put with a throw of 11.15m.
AO Prep Meet #2
Toronto, ON, February 9, 2014
Athletics Ontario´s second indoor prep meet held at York University, resulted in 3 new club records and 14 new PB´s for STL athletes.
The club records were broken in all three areas - by a thrower, a sprinter and a jumper. Rebecca Chouinard broke the club record in Youth Girls shot put with a throw of 11.38m. She also placed 2nd in the Weight throw with a toss of 14.90m. Julia Vanhoucke ran for a new club record in the Midget Girls 400m with the time of 1:06. 42. Allie Kennedy competed in her first Pole Vault competition since starting this new event in the fall and placed 2nd with a jump of 2.50m, resulting in the third club record broken.

LW-STL Indoor Meet #2
London, ON, February 2, 2014
This was the second meet we co-organized with London Western and this time around this meet had many more entries compare to the first one back on January 11th.
Our club athletes achieved many personal records and a few club records were broken. One of those record was also a new Provincial Record.
Rebecca Chouinard threw the weight throw at a new Provincial record in the Youth category with a 15.08m performance and with that throw she is ranked # 1 nationally.
Karli Milmine had two personal bests in Shot put and the Weight Throw with an 11.03m and 11.99m respectively.
Both Brittney Wouters and Tanner Smyth marked new club records in the Midget category with 48.15 for Brittney and 43.20 for Tanner.
Three more club records were broken in the Bantam category. Bella Dalal had 2 records, One in the 1200m with a time of 4:47.34 and the 300m with 58.42.
The last record in the list was marked from AJ Stannat in the Shot Put with an effort of 6.36m.
Personal bests for Tanner Smyth and Hayden Bell in the Midget boys 60mHurdles with 10.24 & 10.27.
Other noticeable performances. Julia Vanhoucke in the Midget girls 60m with a time of 8.51.
Don Wright Team Challenge
London, ON, January 14, 2014
This year´s Western University varsity meet, the Annual Don Wright Team Challenge, included events for high school age athletes on the meet schedule. Some of STL´s Youth and Junior age category athletes competed at this meet with a long list of PB´s to show for their efforts.
In the Youth category, Noah Rolph represented STL in Shot Put and Weight Throw with performances of 15.68m & 21.51m respectively for 2 new PB´s and a new club record in shot put. Rebecca Chouinard also achieved 2 new PB´s and 2 new club records with a Shot Put distance of 10.99m and a throw of 14.19m in her Weight Throw competition. This was Rebecca´s first time ever competing in Weight Throw and her best throw in competition was just 12cm shy of the Provincial record.
Our Junior athletes also had excellent showings. Karli Milmine competed in Weight Throw for a new PB and club record with a throw of 10.88m. She also placed 2nd in Shot Put with 10.71m. Another STL Junior athlete, Allie Kennedy, competed in both Women´s Long Jump and 60m. She too had PB´s in both of her events with a jump of 4.88m and a time of 8.38s.
In the varsity events, we had several STL athletes who are currently attending Western University, compete in varsity colours. Matt Brisson, Riley Bell, and Madison Halls all won their events, with others achieving new PB´s.

2014 Indoor Season Begins
London, ON, January 11, 2014
STL athletes opened up the indoor season this past weekend in London at an All Comers Meet hosted by London Western & STL. There were some notable impressive performances from our younger group of athletes.
The club was heavily represented this year in both the Bantam & Midget categories. This meet featured our athletes from the Midget category and they did not disappoint. By the end of our 1st meet, we saw 5 club records broken.
In the Midget category, Cassidy Kent broke the girls High Jump record with a jump of1.30m. Brittney Wouters has the new girls Long Jump record of 3.92m and Tanner Smyth jumped 4.74m for the new record in boys Long Jump.
Noah Rolph also broke the Youth boys Shot put record with a throw of 15.61m and Karli Milmine was the 5th athlete to break a club record in the Junior girls Shot Put with a distance of 10.78m.
Congratulations to all our STL athletes for a very strong start. We look forward to more success over the next few months of the indoor season, as STL prepares for the Indoor Provincial Championships in March.
